Captain Marvel Movie Review
I’m in the middle with this movie because I didn’t hate it. I didn’t love it either. It’s a 6 out of 10 movie, maybe a 7 if you take in consideration Sam Jackson’s ad libs. The amount of screen time he got saved it quite a bit. Ben Mendelsohn is great too, he has this gift of saving terrible movies with a great performance. It does not matter how bad a movie is, you will remember it fondly solely based on Ben’s performance.
Not that this movie was so bad that only Ben stood out, it was a watchable movie it was fine. There was a hand full of jokes that landed, I didn’t really expected that and the interaction between Captain Marvel and Nick Fury was decent for most part of the movie. It was everything we were told it was going to be, and the Stan Lee Tribute was really sweet. They definitely saved his best cameo for last (I wonder if it will be one in endgame). Avengers: Endgame
When it comes to the story telling, it was a bit lazy. Answers and conclusions are not worthwhile or entertaining in any way. At least is not Marvel type of entertaining, example, Fury having his eye scratched by the alien cat. Whatever happened to ‘’The last time I trusted someone I lost an eye’’ ? Surely I thought that the story behind Fury’s missing eye was more interesting. Oops! Talking about spoilers…
About the hero, the ever so gentle suggestion of a character, the soft whisper of a personality that it is Brie Larson’s attempted take on Captain Marvel. She is powerful, she is strong, she is so cool. But all of these things are never established in the movie, I was just told. Constantly told, before, during and after watching the movie. If is character development, struggle, challenge and discovery you are expecting to see you will be disappointed.
For Marvel Comic book fans, is a difficult one. Because this movie completely obliterates the source material. Based on Monica Rambeau in the comics, I was disappointed with what they done to her character. Don’t get me wrong, Akira Akbar is one of the highlights of the movie. But having The Monica Rambeau looking up with admiration to this vague memory of a personality that is Captain Marvel in this movie, is an offense.
Originally, Monica is all grown up with her own powers, abilities and amazing story before she even knew (the white dude version of) Captain Marvel existed. One word, disrespectful. A waste of a back story, but OK I’m pretty sure she will be back as an adult in ‘Avengers: Endgame’ and hopefully they will do her justice. That’s the minimum they could do Monica is a really awesome character, look her up HERE!
Get Your Marvel On!
I’m very curious to see what exactly they are going to do with this character. This suppose to be the first of a seven picture deal with Captain Marvel. Can’t see that happening. For that to be possible, this movie should have been widely different and a lot more respectful to the source material.
In conclusion, if you are not hung up on source material and the previous movies you will enjoy it. I actually liked the special effects (that people are complaining so much about) and the songs. Merchandise for this movie is also pretty cool, I’m very tempted by the Aviator Jackets. I’m still going to see ‘Avengers: Endgame’ and try to make sense of Captain Marvel and what she is all about. Still not too sure what she is going to do, maybe bore Thanos to death? That is a possibility.
